The gas station opioid nobody called an opioid

7-OH is short for 7-hydroxymitragynine. It occurs in trace amounts in the kratom leaf. That part is unremarkable. What is remarkable is that for the last few years it has been concentrated, pressed into tablets and shots, and sold at gas stations and smoke shops next to the energy drinks.

Concentrated 7-OH is not kratom leaf. It works on the mu-opioid receptor, and the number you keep seeing traces back to a 2002 guinea pig ileum assay that put it around thirteen times the potency of morphine. That is animal tissue, not a human dose equivalent, and anyone quoting you a precise multiplier against heroin is selling something. But the direction is not in dispute. FDA reviewed it and called these products opioids.

Here is the regulatory picture, accurately. On July 1 the DEA filed notices of intent to place concentrated 7-OH above a threshold into Schedule I, along with three synthetic derivatives. Those notices published in the Federal Register on July 6. Statute requires a thirty day wait, which put the earliest possible order date at August 5. The order takes effect the day it publishes. As of this writing it has not published.

So there is no countdown clock. There is a window, and it is open right now.

Whole leaf kratom below the threshold is not part of this action. The concentrated tablets are.

Which is the reason Crrow opened the show here rather than with anything glamorous.

There is a population of people who bought these at a checkout counter, took them daily, and never once thought of themselves as someone with an opioid dependence. The label said pick me up. When the shelves clear, they find out on a timeline set by a Federal Register publication date instead of by a clinician.

If that is you or someone in your house, the move is a doctor. Not a peptide. Not a supplement stack. Not a protocol you read in a newsletter, including this one. Withdrawal from an opioid is a medical situation, it is managed by people who do that for a living, and the window to make it a planned transition instead of a forced one is open today and will not be open indefinitely.
